Optimizing Movable Type (part 6) - Category XML feeds

Am I vain? I certainly took up ia/'s offer of syndication by creating XML feeds by category, and by sending my KM/IA-related RSS feed to them...

If you're interested in doing the same, here's how:

  1. Should you wish to make any modifications to the default RSS 0.91 template (this was the one I used, shame on me for not using RSS 2.0 (yet)), go to (in Movable Type 2.21 (shame on me for not upgrading to 2.5 (yet) ;-) :

Templates > Index Templates > RSS 0.91 Index

Click on the index and select and copy the contents
  2. Now go to

Templates > Archive-Related Templates > Create new archive template

Enter the name "Category RSS Template" (or whatever you feel like) and paste the contents you copied above into the contents field. Make any modifications you'd like. You might find the MT Template Tags docs handy.
  3. To activate the template, go to

Blog Config > Archiving > Add New...

Select Archive Type Category, Template: Category RSS Template (created above)
  4. Set the name of the archive to

    categories/<$MTArchiveCategory dirify="1"$>/index.xml

    or whatever you please :-)
  5. Result: http://www.jacobsen.no/anders/blog/archives/categories/km_ia/index.xml (and the rest of the categories...)

And now you're in Anders. Grabbing your feeds every 3 hours. Thanks!

Cheers for that, Michael ;-)

I look forward to see if there will be other, future applications of the feeds as well. I somehow suspect people in general won't be too interested in subscribing just one category, but for applications like ia/ it seems ideal.
