I have had a contract with Vodafone Corporate for a year now, and with an average spend of about 100 pounds per month, I figured it was a good time to ask for a free upgrade of my handset. No such thing; in fact, the proposed prices for "upgrades" are almost more expensive than what can be had online for SIM free handset - i.e. handset with no contractual obligations whatsoever...
Browsing around I have a couple of alternatives: Orange offers a free SonyEricsson T610 with a decent contract; I'm also still considering the Nokias 6100, 7250i and 8910i with whatever contract I can get (seems 8910i is not available online from Orange.co.uk at least)
What I want form a phone is, in no particular order:
One of the things that has kept me comfortably with Nokia the last 5 years of mobile phone-purchases has been the availability online of hacks and cheap/free software for logo creation / ringtone uploading ("LogoManager" being a prime example) , phone book management and similar.
The Sony T610 looks sexy, but I wanted to make sure I could upload free ringtones, not having to pay the extortionate amounts charges by all the sites that come up if one search google for "free T610 ringtones" or any permutation of related keywords (NONE of them are free!)
The people over at mobiledia.com, however, pointed me to the FMA project for SE T610/T68, and that sounds promising.
So now I ask you, Dear Reader: any advice on where I should go; which network and phone is the best buy in UK at the moment?
+ does anyone know a source for decent, free MIDI files that can be used as polyphonic ringtones? When I got Logo Manager first time around, I remember easily finding collections of thousands of files and logos for free... Not so easy this time around:
Feel free to post non-spam URLs below for anyone to enjoy. Thanks!

As you seem to have found on one of my websites, you can "cheat" and get free ringtones for the T610 at http://www.phunkyphones.net. Also, as far as logos/wallpaper is concerned, it's just a matter of uploading a GIF or a JPG, and they even provide very handy software (PC only) for zooming/cropping to the right size.

Posted by: Jeff on November 13, 2003 04:18 AMJust a word of warning Anders: The Sony Ericsson phones have had a serious problem with quality assurance lately. It seems like the tempo in their factories have taken off to such a degree that the quality really suffers.
Personally I have gone through 3 phones in 1 1/2 year, and been without a phone for about 2 months at a time every time I had to send the phone in for repair. (First a T39, then a T68 and now a new T68i that I will have to send in for repair soon it seems).
My friends that have been using the T610 has also reported serious problems with that phone.
I have had similar problems with Nokia phones in the past, so chances are that my next cell-phone purchase won't be a Sony Ericsson or Nokia.
Posted by: Jarle on November 13, 2003 10:26 AMThanks, all, for the input. Jeff - that site is a find for full feature MIDI files! I strongly suspect that's going to convince me to pick up a new phone soonish!
Posted by: Anders on November 13, 2003 12:57 PMHow about a Z200? It's out soon. I'm getting it! It'l be my first cellular...imagine that, the last person in the world (yeah, and I haven't seen The Godfather either)...
It look veeery good and it has everything I want and don't want. No camera and no MMS but nice screen, calendar and stuff.
Posted by: Agnar on November 14, 2003 02:32 PMQuite amusing; I just called vodafone to ask for a PAC - this is generally their last opportunity to regain someone's business, and all they asked for was an email to get the request in writing, and I'd have the code in a couple of days...
I'm not sure if I'm amused or sad on their behalf, seeing how little they care about keeping customers... Ah well - not my problem...
