I first saw this text sample when learning to work with Adobe PageMaker together with a bunch of newspaper graphics guys more than 10 years ago. Seen in anything from PageMaker to Letraset sheets and elsewhere in the publishing industry more than 500 years back, what, exactly, is this? Latin? Garbage? I realized I've never actually queried.

Of course, as always, The Internet holds the answer, and this site tells the whole story: The History of Lorem Ipsum (and a handy generator, too!):

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

Actually, I didn't expect to get trackbacked on my test posting. Katla (you find a link to her huin105 blog on my blog) has written a little bit about this too. And, yes, I used the lipsum generator on lipsum.com to generate my test posting
