Hello Orkut!

Orkut Buyukkokten is working at Google, and in his allotted spare time, he developed Orkut - Google's contribution to the social networking scene (read more release info).

While Friendster has been going strong in the US for a while, and new German Friendity recently got started, this means a major shakeup in the industry: startups will have a lot harder time trying to win if Google puts some market muscle behind its offering.

Why do they do it? Hard to say, but they've already bought blogger.com and can/will use it to enhance search results using their "webquotes" functionality.

What comes next? Imagine social bookmarking site del.icio.us on drugs and merged with Eurekster-like search engine results enhancement functionality?!

The future's bright, my friends.

... next: how many people will bother registering & will such technologies reach critical mass - reach wide enough to improve the lives of the average web-users, or will it remain a technology for the front-running geeks? Only time can tell, but informed sources tell me Friendster has made a fair bit of impact in the US the last year (while being a fairly unfamiliar site over here in Europe)

Goog luck, Google & Orkut!

Lots of informative links in this post. I wonder why Orkut is an invitation-only? I guess the developers are trying to capitalize on the appeal of exclusivity.

Hi Louis; I imagine them being invitation-only ensures a couple of things:

1) semi-controlled growth in the start (imagine the hundreds of thousands of people that are going to hit their front pages the next weeks?)
2) they'll avoid any un-connected users - since anyone joining has at least one connection by definition, they'll avoid "loose clouds" of smaller groups of people
3) of course, there's a certain air of exclusivity to it...

Posted by: Anders on January 23, 2004 02:10 PM

Surely it is the avoidance of unconnected people that this is aimed at stopping. For the trial to be successful people need to get something out of it, and having slightly connected groups will give it a kick in the right direction!

Is there any info on the site about how many members it already has?
I heard they sent 13000 invitations yesterday. It would be interesting to see how fast this can grow (and how long it will take until someone of my friends invites me ;)).
