One of the locations I access the net from has blocked access to the Orkut website from their network. Accessing it by running ssh to another host and lynx from there, however, is a possibility, if the website itself only had been accessible:
The below crop (click to see full screenshot) show how useless a site using graphical navigation becomes when no IMG ALT tags are applied to the images used in navigation. (names of the innocent removed for their privacy).
Is Mr X my friend? The options I have to answer are [LINK] and [LINK]. Neat.
Not.
What if I was blind? What about the blind? .. or anyone else using lynx or a text-based browser for whatever reason?
I once tried Friendster and also ran into some other usability problems, but I dare to say that the screenshot above shows that Google hasn't spent anywhere near the same amount of effort on making Orkut as accessible as the "big-brother" of usable websites, Google.com...
I find it strange that people would skip over such simple things as ALT tags that could greatly improve the accessibility of their sites. So what if Orkut is still in infancy. There's some things that are just easier to fix than to not.
Posted by: Philip on February 3, 2004 02:22 PMI think it's the [INLINE] in the lower right corner of the page that says "beta".
Posted by: StickyC on February 3, 2004 06:59 PMAnders, why don't you just create an SSH-tunnel to www.orkut.com and use Internet Explorer to view the page?
Posted by: Christian Stigen Larsen on February 4, 2004 12:38 PMChristian - I thought about it but I'm not THAT keen. Furthermore I still wanted to highlight the accessability issue with missing ALT tags for other users not in my position (i.e. not able to do ssh tunnelling).
Thanks for the tip, though!
