So I ordered the Linksys WAG54GUK Wireless 4 Port ADSL Modem Gateway with Firewall the day before Rich tipped me about his bad experiences with it. Still, installation was a breeze: hooking the box up with a network cable initially, then configuring the connection parameters, setting up WEP Security etc - all nicely explained in the Quick Start guide and easy for anyone who has filled in forms on the web before.
Then *drum roll* unplugging my PC, I tried to connect wirelessly. Carefully entering my 26 digit 128bit WEP key, I got .... no connection. RTFM, I thought, and read... and read and read the troubleshooting section and all. Maybe my PCMCIA Wifi card wasn't up to the challenge? A second, natively wifi enabled laptop tried connecting with same result.
Fiddling about with the settings, amazingly I managed to make both PCs connect only after setting and using a lesser (10 digit) WEP encryption key. No BIG deal, but weird nevertheless.... Now the connection is permanently on under the motto "it if works, don't fix it" ;-) If anyone finds a WiFi network named "extrospection.com" and want to leech access, let me know... :-)
Hm. I've got mine WAG54G (no UK here) a while ago [1] and it works flawlessly, even with long WEP keys. Perhaps the UK-version is any different from the-rest-of-the-world-version?
