In the series of curious queries people have asked at this website, someone came looking for "something interesting about the united kingdom".

The real name of the state commonly referred to as United Kingdom or simply UK is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". This is not the same as Great Britain (sometimes even just nicknamed "Britain" in the press), which is the geographical name for the largest island in the British Isles, and includes the mainland nations of England, Wales and Scotland, sometimes also including their islands. The term "Great" in Great Britain is used in opposition to "Little" Britain or Brittany in France (the '-ny' ending being diminutive).
