Where is the .ac domain name from?

Having written about sms.ac as well as .la, .fm etc, I get a number of hits from people looking for more information (what is .ac domain name, where is .la domain name from etc).

A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is a top-level domain used and reserved for a country or a dependent territory. These are two letters long, and most of them correspond to the ISO 3166-1 standard for country codes.

.ac is for Ascension Island, .fm is for Federated States of Micronesia and so on. The full list can be found at Wikipedia's List of TLDs.
