Webloggers: Give to tsunami victims and I'll give too!
I've only gotten positive feedback on my posting on New Year's Eve, and seeing the Tsunami death toll still climbing, I want to challenge other webloggers:

Whether you give money, time or whether you decide to share your link-power; if you create a post on your weblog front page or create permanent links in your blogroll and link to the below organizations, then link to my blog and this posting, I will pay US$ 1 to the British Red Cross. I will visit/verify any blog trackbacking this post or showing up Technorati the next two weeks and donate accordingly.

Update: each posting of the below now generates approximately US$ 3.28! Read more here and at Eliot's place.

Fine print: only real blogs count (i.e. no fakes/dummies, minimum 1 inbound link in Technorati to ensure authenticity). Cap of my donation is US$ 500, but the new top total donation is US$ 1640 (should there be 500 people responding to this challenge within two weeks). I'll post the count and amount after Jan 16th.

Here are the links to put on your page:
International aid organizations:
UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund)
United Nations' World Food Programme
Medecins Sans Frontieres / Doctors without Borders (donate!)
CARE International
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

I've previously made my donation via ARC, and made a similar entry here as well. Uhm, okay, so I didn't have that matching business, but the concept was there. Good on ya!

Thank you, Anders! I just posted the whole shebang on my blog:

Technorati seems to hate me, but I swear I am a real (albeit small) blogger. I was just a judge for the Best of Blog Awards & several of my blogrolled folks link to me too, so I do have inbound links. Besides all that, thank you for putting a good list of reputable places to donate.

Why dont you just donate the $500 and shut up?
you bloggers are all the same. stroking your ego in the name of charity, you should be ashamed. I'll assume you've donated the full amount by now.

Posted by: Jim on January 6, 2005 02:34 PM

Jim: Because I already donated 150$ and thought that this way, if things work out, thousands of blog readers all over the world will find information on how to donate, hopefully yielding tens or hundred times more donations than just little me chipping in my money. From the response I've gotten it seems like this challenge has kicked off a lot donations by other bloggers, plus of course form their readers. Furthermore, all these links to the organizations' websites will yield a long-term benefit for them: hopefully resulting in also future donations and future visibility for them, also after all the buzz about the tsunami has died out...

Done. Thanks

Posted by: Patrick Logan on January 6, 2005 08:41 PM

As the death toll from Sunday's earthquake and tsunamis rockets past
100,000, dozens of relief organizations are working overtime to provide
immediate and long-term relief to survivors. One of the organizations
raising money is the Rainbow World Fund (www.rainbowfund.org), the first
LGBT world relief agency.

Jeff Cotter, a San Francisco psychiatric social worker, says he started
Rainbow World Fund (RWF) four years ago because none of the traditional
relief organizations were developing philanthropy and consciousness in the
LGBT community. It is that dual mission -- direct relief hand in hand with
changing opinions and beliefs -- that moves RWF. Cotter calls it a
solidarity model, rather than a charity model.

This is a fantastic thing to do!
Here is an idea for you & your readers..

What other solid, valid sites are still matching funds so our donations can be doubled and do the most good?
We should max out the generous matching donation programs out there..

Intrepid Travel's was matching donations to Medecins Sans Frontieres but they've surpassed their ceiling.. http://www.intrepidtravel.com/appeal.php
Other sites I'm sure have also hit their limit.

AID-Sulekha Tsunami Fund is one. http://www.sulekha.com/aidtsunami/
What other sites are still matching donations?
